The whitest beaches in the world and outstanding standard of living. We love calling this place home. Low cost of living, a great blend of cultures, and breathtaking scenery make this area a vacation hub by millions. Real estate costs here are often below the national average and a real bargin for the waterfront purchaser. A fun blend of cultures include Hispanic, Creole, African American & Southern. This combination brings a mouth watering variety of foods together at area restaurants. The influence of our military is everywhere, from Pensacola's Naval Air Station, which is home to the Aviation Museum and the Blue Angels, to Eglin Air Force Base, which is one of the largest military bases in the world. Our locals appreciate the military and their service to our country. Education is tops with the growing University of West Florida, Northwest Florida State College, and Pensacola State College.
Indian cultures have been here for thousands of years. Don Tristan de Luna, colonizer under King Phillip of Spain, made the first white settlement in North America at the site of Pensacola on August 14, 1559. The settlement did not last because of storms and disease, but was later settled again. Much of the Emerald Coast has history under the governance of five different flags: Spain, France, England, United States, & the Confederacy. Evidence of these remain from the street names to various forts and cannons. One of Don Tristan de Luna's ships has been located in one of the bays and is being excavated by the University of West Florida. The Emerald Coast loves to celebrate it's history through various fiestas: The Fiesta of Five Flags, The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival, and the Mullet Festival are the largest. Every weekend one can experience plays, art shows, volleyball tournaments, 5Ks, seafood festivals, or fishing rodeos. The Blue Wahoos Baseball, the Ice Flyers hockey, and the 5 Flags Speedway are also popular destinations.
