Located at the center of the Emerald Coast, Fort Walton Beach is home to Eglin Air Force Base and the whitest beaches in the world.  People from across the nation were stationed here and have chosen to move back here to buy a home after retiring from the military.  And why not?  To own a home here is to own a piece of paradise! It is bordered by Eglin Air Force Base to the North and West, Choctawhatchee Bay to the East, and the Gulf of Mexico to the South.

History & Activities

Fort Walton Beach was founded by my great grandfather, John Brooks shortly after the Civil War.  During the war, he was stationed here with a Confederate force charged with keeping Union ships from using the Sound waterway as a back door to the Pensacola forts.  When the war ended, he came back to the area and homesteaded the area of what is now downtown Fort Walton Beach.  It was first called Brooks Landing, then Camp Walton before receiving its current name.  At first, the area was only accessible by ferries from Pensacola.  It soon became a fishing and vacation destination with a hotel.

Eventually the federal government purchased the land which is now Eglin AFB and Hurlburt and built the operations there, which grew the population of the area further.  Fort Walton has been referred to as the Heart of the Emerald Coast, the Camillia City and The Playground.  It is host to many festivals, including the Billy Bowlegs Pirate festival.
