One of the best places for outdoor adventure along the Emerald Coast is Milton. Trails and outdoor centers are prominent in the area because of the Blackwater River that runs alongside Downtown Milton.

It is also home to professional athletes such as professional golfer, Boo Weekely, and former quarterback, Reggie Slack.

History & Activities 

Founded in the early 1800’s, Milton is one of the oldest cities in the state of Florida. It is located in Santa Rosa County and serves as the county seat for the area. It was given the nickname “Milltown” because of the value it placed on the lumber industry. Some have speculated that this nickname was the inspiration behind the official city name of Milton. Not long after, the city received another nickname- “Scratch Ankle.” It is rumored that this nickname, referring to the briars that widely grew in the area, was given by Ponce De Leon on his quest through to find the Fountain of Youth.

If you are wanting to get out and explore the spring fed rivers and streams of the Emerald Coast, The Blackwater Heritage State Trail and The Adventures Unlimited Outdoor Center give you plenty of options to do so. These outdoor centers offer activities such as horseback riding, kayaking, camping, canoeing and the largest ropes course on the Gulf Coast. It is also home to the L &N Train Depot/West Florida Railroad Museum.

A Place To Call Home

Milton is one of the most affordable populated areas in Northwest Florida. Though it does not have any available waterfront properties on the Coast, it does offer breathtaking riverfront properties and Blackwater Bay properties.
