Shalimar

Surrounded on almost all sides, Shalimar is said to mean "by the water." It is home to many accessible waterfront parks, schools, restaurants and businesses. Most of the town's businesses are located on Highway 85/Eglin Parkway which runs through the main part of the town. Shalimar is located in Okaloosa County.

History

Before the town was known as Shalimar, it was referred to as Port Dixie. There were plans to develop the area into a thriving business and residential area in the early 1900’s, but the plans failed. In the 1940s through the vision of Clifford Meigs, the town became known as Shalimar. Since its beginning, it has been home to many military families, both active and retired. It remains an area heavily populated by military personnel to this day.

Shalimar Elementary, Longwood Elementary and Meigs Middle School are located in Shalimar. If you are a sports enthusiast you would find the Shalimar Pointe Golf Club to be both scenic and challenging, located on the Choctawhatchee Bay. Parks such as Meigs and Cherokee are great places to take your family.

A Place To Call Home

Shalimar is approximately nine miles from Fort Walton Beach and nineteen miles from Destin. It is close to Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field. Airports just up the road make Shalimar a great place to live with easy access to many other parts of the world!
