Mary Esther

Mary Esther is located between Fort Walton Beach and Navarre in Okaloosa County. Restaurants, two movie theaters and the Santa Rosa Mall make it a popular place to live and visit on the Emerald Coast. It’s located near many accessible beaches and many larger tourist cities.

History & Activities

Mary Esther received its name from John Newton, who was responsible for opening the first Post Office in the town in 1871. It is not certain who John Newton named Mary Esther after. Some have speculated it was after his wife or two daughters. In 1946 the city became incorporated.

There are many things to do in Mary Esther such as catch a movie at the either of its two movie theaters or go shopping at the Santa Rosa Mall. The mall opened in 1976 and is responsible for most of the growth in the area.

The city is wedged between Hurlburt Field and the Eglin Air Force Base, making many of the residents military.

Mary Esther is a beautiful city with close proximity to beaches, the only mall in the surrounding areas and military bases. This is the perfect place to live if you would like to stay away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities such as Destin and Pensacola.
